Notice is hereby given pursuant to Article 3 (b) of the Huu-ay-aht Referendum and Recall Act that there will be a referendum vote on March 25, 2017. The following question will be asked:

 

“Do you approve the proposed Huu-ay-aht Sarita LNG Project?”

Voting Day : Saturday March 25, 2017.
Polls open: 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

All eligible voters will receive a mail-in ballot package. Mail-in ballots must be received by the Election Commissioner before 12:00 noon on March 25, 2017 to be eligible. Any voter can vote in person or by mail-in ballot.

Voters will be required to provide photo identification. If a voter does not have identification satisfactory to the election officials, he or she may be required to complete a solemn declaration attesting to their identity.

The Election Commissioner is responsible for the fair, efficient, accessible and transparent conduct of the elections under the Election Act. The duties and powersof the Election Commissioner are detailed in Division 1 of the Election Act.

Project to Improve Oral Health

The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, First Nations Health Authority, and Island Health need your help!  They want to know what you feel is important about oral health, and how they could make it easier for people to get the care they need.

You can help by filling out a survey, and you can do that online or at a community event.  The answers are anonymous, and you will be able to see a report about how your community responded after the survey results are in.

Best of all, you get to help shape the plan by telling them how they can help you have better oral health.

Nanaimo citizens invited to meet with Panel

Huu-ay-aht First Nations has identified “bringing our children home” as a priority for the Nation.

Work has begun on an important project to keep Huu-ay-aht children safe, happy, healthy, and connected with their families and culture.

Huu-ay-aht staff within the Community Services Department have been working hard to help support Huu-ay-aht children and families and have already shown leadership in building continuity and cultural connections for Huu-ay-aht children who are taken into care. But Huu-ay-aht government is also taking a careful and detailed look at what can and should be done under our Treaty powers to provide stronger support to our families and children who need it most.

An independent four-member Panel has been appointed by Huu-ay-aht Executive Council to explore and recommend changes and improvements that can be made under our Treaty to child and family services for Huu-ay-aht families.

The panel has respectfully requested that Huu-ay-aht citizens meet with them to share stories and experiences. The panel needs to hear and learn from our people and from all caregivers for our children to understand what is working and what is not working for Huu-ay-aht children and families.

The Panel wishes to hear from us about:

  • You or your families experiences with child and family services,
  • Stories you have been told that guide or anchor a Huu-ay-aht way of caring for children and families,
  • Your thoughts and ideas about how to bring our children home and keep them safe, happy, healthy, and connected to our Huu-ay-aht culture.

The panel is open to meeting in whatever way people feel safe and comfortable to discuss these important issues, for example, with individuals privately and confidentially, with family groups, and in community gatherings.

Sessions have been held in Port Alberni and Vancouver already, and they are hosting another in Nanaimo on Sunday, February 26 at the Coast Bastion Hotel. The session will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch is included.

Public Notice – Application for an interest in Huu-ay-aht lands – Lease

PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that:

Western Forest Products (WFP) has made an application under the Land Act, s. 18 for a 99 year Lease over an area of approximately 103 acres and associated statutory right of way.

The purpose of the interest applied for is to acquire a lease and statutory right of way for lands at Sarita Bay where WFP operates a dryland sort. This lease is part of a transaction where Huu-ay-aht will acquire lands at Sarita Bay, but will lease a smaller portion of the lands back to WFP for the operation of the dryland sort.

The lease and statutory right of way will be for 99 years, triple net, with no base rent, and will be registerable at the BC Lands Title Office. The lease will be on standard commercial terms for the lease of industrial property in British Columbia.

Diagram and report can be viewed at the Huu-ay-aht Government Offices in Anacla (170 Nookemus Road) and Port Alberni (4644 Adelaide St.). If more information is required a request can be made through the Director of Lands Resource and Infrastructure.

Request for Quotes – 2017 Food Fish Program – Deadline extended

Halibut, Sockeye, Chinook & Coho

The Huu-ay-aht First Nations Government has extended the deadline for bids for Halibut and Salmon harvest for our annual domestic Food Fish Program. Proposals for one or more contracts are welcome.

Please submit a written bid describing all of the following  (Template available here):

  • Name of Captain and Deckhands
  • Contact information (phone, email, and address)
  • Vessel name, length, and description
  • Summary of fishing experience of captain and crew
  • References
  • Huu-ay-aht First Nations or other First Nation Membership
  • Maximum amount of fish you’re bidding on
  • Price per pound or piece
