The Oomiiqsu (Aboriginal Mother Centre) is a unique, innovative and culturally appropriate approach to keeping families together. Oomiiqsu is a departure from the status quo of removing indigenous children and youth from their families and this new model of care represents reconciliation. This project is in response to Recommendation 26 of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations Social Services Project Report “Safe, Healthy, and Connected: Bringing Huu-ay-aht Children Home”.
Land has been purchased by BC Housing in Port Alberni and the architectural design for Oomiiqsu and the Oomiiqsu Childcare Centre have been completed. The next step is to have the land rezoned and we are excited to announce that a date has been set for a Public Hearing!
Update June 22, 2021: The Oomiiqsu project’s rezoning has been approved!
