Food Fish Program and How to Apply

Every year, the Huu-ay-aht Lands and Natural Resources Department posts a Request for Quotes (RFQ’s) for fisherman to participate in paid harvesting for our Food Fish Program. If you are a fisherman and would like to participate in this program, here’s how:

1. Watch out for notifications.

RFQ’s are posted via Huu-ay-aht social media, the Huu-ay-aht app, and the Huu-ay-aht website. These will usually be released every year in January/February.

2. Complete your RFQ either digitally or by hand. Information that is required:

  • Name of Captain
  • Contact information (phone, email, and address)
  • Vessel name, length, and description
  • Name of captain and deckhand(s)
  • Summary of fishing experience of captain and crew
  • Huu-ay-aht First Nations or other First Nation Membership
  • If you are willing to hire or train Huu-ay-aht crew members
  • Maximum number of fish you’re bidding on
  • Price per pound or piece

    3. Return your forms to the Port Alberni (4644 Adelaide St.) or Anacla Government Office (170 Nookemus Rd.) or submit digitally.

4. Await response.

If you submit a successful bid, you will be offered a contract to fish for the Huu-ay-aht Food Fish Program. Though you may receive a contract for the full amount you bid on, we receive many bids each season and may need to split up our quota amongst several qualified bidders.

5. Receive your contract, flag, and protocols.

Successful fishers will receive a contract with the Huu-ay-aht Government. This contract process can take 2 to 4 weeks to complete. Once you have a contract, you will receive information and guidance from the Natural Resources Department. All vessels fishing under Huu-ay-aht’s program must receive, mount and display this flag while fishing for the nation.

6. Hail out and Fish!

Contact the Natural Resources Manager to let them know your fishing plan and coordinate an offload location (Either Ucluelet or Port Alberni).
