Huu-ay-aht’s new bus arrives

Huu-ay-aht First Nations has a new set of wheels.

At last year’s People’s Assembly, citizens expressed a desire to have a school bus for Huu-ay-aht students travelling to and from the Bamfield Community School. On Thursday, November 20, a 22-passenger bus rolled up to the Port Alberni Government Office and Huu-ay-aht received the keys to their new bus.

Citizens wanted a real school bus for students because the Huu-ay-aht van that is being used currently to transport students is used for a number of different purposes.

Every morning, seven Huu-ay-aht youth are transported to the community school in Bamfield. The new bus offers all of the bells and whistles needed to get the youth to school safely every day. It is equipped with a stop sign, flashing lights and a safety bar that keeps students visible to the bus driver and others on the road.

The funds for the new bus was planned for in the 2014 budget under Capital Projects. The bus will be used chiefly for transporting students, but because it is a private school bus it can also be used when needed by the Nation for other transportation needs.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve for Spring Break

The Kwisitis Visitor Centre on Wickaninnish Beach is a great place to come and view the wonderful exhibits that speak to the natural and cultural aspects of the West Coast.  Many of the exhibits were developed in cooperation with community members from 8 different Nuu-chah-nulth nations and speak to the rich and vibrant culture of the area.

The Kwisitis Visitor Centre outdoor observation deck is also a wonderful land-based whale watching area.  Sightings of gray whales making their way up the coast throughout March, although unpredictable, are frequent at the Kwisitis Visitor Centre. NVIT Law Enforcement Preparation Program

The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology offers a Law Enforcement Preparation Program that may be of interest to Huu-ay-aht citizens.  Please see their website CLICK HERE for more information about the program.  You may also wish to contact HFN’s Education department about funding opportunities and deadlines.

The Law Enforcement Preparatory Program prepares individuals for entrance into law enforcement or public safety careers.  The program is designed to assist students in developing the necessary skills and academic knowledge required to become police officers with the RCMP.  It is aligned with the RCMP cadet selection requirements and training standards in order to ensure students success.  Throughout and once the students have completed the program, they will be encouraged to begin the process to become a police officer with the RCMP.  The graduates from the program bring language and cultural skills that will continue to enhance the RCMP’s relationship with Canada’s Aboriginal communities.
