Huu-ay-aht Fishers land and sell their first Chinook in the Maa-nulth Incremental Community-based Economic Fishery.

Huu-ay-aht is pleased to share that yesterday Huu-ay-aht Fishers have landed and sold their first Chinook in the Maa-nulth Incremental Community-based Economic Fishery.

This Fishery was negotiated though the “ Me  Too” Clause within the Maa-nulth Treaty. This is the first step in gaining access to economic fisheries for Maa-nulth citizen fishers.

On August 19th three HFN fishers landed fish at the offload site in Ucluelet and were cut a cheque on site for their catch.

Huu-ay-aht raises their hands to the hard work that went into this opportunity and send good luck to the fishers as they continue to catch fish in the fishery.

Indian Boarding Homes Class Action Settlement

YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPENSATION
Information for Potential Claimants – Primary Class Members

An agreement has been negotiated to settle a class action lawsuit against Canada for the Indian Boarding Homes Program. The Program placed Indigenous children into private boarding homes in non-Indigenous communities to attend elementary and secondary school. The Settlement Agreement obligates Canada to financially compensate Indigenous people placed in these homes through that program.

You may be eligible for compensation if you:

  1. are Indigenous; and
  2. lived in someone else’s home between September 1, 1951 and June 30, 1992 in order to attend elementary or secondary school outside your home community.

Eligible people will receive $10,000 if they were placed through the Program. Additional compensation ($10,000 to $200,000) may be available to those who experienced abuse during their time in the Program.

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, you can apply for compensation as early as August 21, 2024. The process is simple and there are people available to assist you with the application. The first Claims Period for the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement opened on March 10, 2025. Class Members of the Removed Child Class and the Removed Child Family Class can now submit a Claim for compensation.

Huu-ay-aht First Nations and ACRD Urge Essential Travel Only on Youbou Route

In response to the ongoing Mount Underwood wildfire, located along the Bamfield Main Road above the China Creek area, the Huu-ay-aht First Nations Government (HFN), in coordination with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD), is issuing an important travel advisory.

Since the evening of Monday, August 11, 2025, the Bamfield Main Road to Port Alberni is closed to all traffic. The only remaining accessible route in and out of Bamfield and Anacla is the Youbou back road to Cowichan. While there is no current evacuation order for Anacla or Bamfield, the situation remains unpredictable, and road access could change rapidly.

To ensure the safety of residents and visitors, and to protect the integrity of limited emergency and community resources, Huu-ay-aht First Nations and ACRD are strongly requesting the following actions:

  • All travel on the Youbou Route will be limited to essential use only.
  • All visitors with upcoming plans to travel to Bamfield or Anacla are asked to reschedule their trips.
  • Visitors currently in the community are asked to begin their journey home immediately while conditions remain safe.

Route to Youbou from Bamfield

The Bamfield Main Road is closed due to a wildfire called the Mount Underwood that is located above China Creek Marina. There is no access to Port Alberni at this time and there is an alternate route through Youbou.(See map above)

Route Details

  1. Drive to Franklin Camp on Bamfield Main Road.
  2. Turn right on Carmanah Main.
  3. Turn left on Cowichan Main.
  4. Stay on North Shore Road and continue to Youbou

Wildfire Update: Mount Underwood

Important Notice Regarding Travel to and from the Bamfield and Anacla Community

With a wildfire called the Mount Underwood located along the Bamfield Main Road above the China Creek area, we respectfully ask visitors to refrain from travelling to the Bamfield and Anacla Community.

With only one safe route accessible through the back road from Bamfield to Youbou (See map below), we encourage visitors to plan to return home, while it is still safe and possible. We kindly ask that no additional visitors come into the area to avoid adding pressure on our limited resources.

The Bamfield Main Road to Port Alberni is closed to all traffic and ask all road users to only take the Youbou route.

Residents in the Bamfield and Anacla area are encouraged to utilize the Youbou Route for essential travel only.

The Pachena Bay Campground is not evacuating current visitors, however, we are monitoring the situation and resources closely.

Due to power outages and access to internet, physical updates will be available twice daily (in the morning and afternoon) on corkboards located at the Pachena Bay Campground, Bamfield Market, Gas Bar, East and West Government Dock, and in lower and upper Anacla.
