Application deadline is March 1, annually. Citizens must apply annually. This also applies to citizen who currently rent a house in Anacla.
Citizens living in or visiting Anacla will have noticed that the Nation is busy constructing 11 new units of housing, including both detached homes and multi-family units in the Upper Village on Nookemus Road.
While a few of these units are already occupied or allocated, others will be available for occupancy in mid-March as well as some other units already constructed.
With the funding that has been made available, there are different requirements to place renters into units, such as family size, genders, incomes, and special needs based on Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) requirements. The Nation will need to take these factors into account when allocating units.
In addition to the requirements of the CMHC, Executive Council recently approved a new Rental Housing Regulation (RHR) which can be viewed here. The new regulation is based largely on the Residential Tenancy Act of BC, and does away with the former Huu-ay-aht Social Housing Regulation. The RHR establishes new rules for the allocation of units, as well as the responsibilities of tenants and the Landlord (which is Huu-ay-aht First Nations).
The RHR also requires the establishment of an independent Housing Authority (HA) which will manage all Huu-ay-aht rental units once it is established. The HA will collect rents, maintain all units, and will have responsibility for selecting tenants once it is operational. However, this is not likely to be in place in the next few months, and Huu-ay-aht will have interim responsibilities of the HA.
As current tenants are coming to the end of their leases on April 1, 2022, all current tenants need to complete a new Rental Application, which is available here, or in either Huu-ay-aht Government offices.
Huuayaht citizens in need of rental housing in Anacla, or desiring to move to Anacla should complete the Rental Application, and these will be evaluated against available housing units and the legal requirements.
The Nation has received preliminary approval from BC Housing to construct eight additional two and three bedroom multi-family units. These are tentatively scheduled to be ready for occupancy in March or April 2023.
