 NTC Scholarship Applications 2017

Huu-ay-aht First Nations provides two programs to support families with school age children: School Supply Allowance and Student Recognition (attendance and honour roll).

Who is eligible?
• School Supply Allowance is provided for students entering Kindergarten and Grades 1 through 12.
• Student Recognition is provided for students who have completed Grades 1 through 12.

Why is HFN Education asking for report cards for attendance?
• HFN encourages Huu-ay-aht children to attend school regularly. Regular attendance in school helps children keep up with their studies and peers, makes it easier to learn to read and can build a child’s confidence. Good attendance in school also sets the stage for the rest of their lives to do well in high school, college and at work.

How do we apply?
• Forward a copy of the student’s final report card from the 2016/17 school year. Attendance, Honour Roll, and School Supply Allowance will be automatically calculated.

Entering Kindergarten in September 2017?
• Simply submit a request and address confirmation form to receive a School Supply Allowance – no report card is required.

What is the School Supply Allowance?
• Kindergarten & Grades 1 – 5 receive a $50 Staples gift card; Grades 6 -12 receive a $100 cheque. Please indicate if Staples Canada is not an option for you on your application and an alternate arrangement may be made for you.

What is the Student Recognition Program for Attendance and how is it calculated?
• Huu-ay-aht First Nations’ students completing Grade 1 through 12 are eligible to apply for attendance recognition at the end of every school year. Please submit attendance summary for entire academic year (September 2015 – June 2016).
• Recognition rate is based on grade level & attendance of 10 months and approximately 180 days of instruction in a school year.
Grades 1 through 9: $10.00 / month = $ 100.00
Grades 10 through 12: $20.00 /month = $ 200.00
• Students are permitted 15 days of absences for illness during the school year. If more than 15 absences are reported, the student may qualify for a reduced recognition amount. Students do not qualify for attendance recognition if they are absent for 35 or more days during the school year.
• Students in self-paced learning/home schooling do not qualify for the attendance recognition program.

What is the Student Recognition Program for Honour Roll and how is it calculated?
• HFN recognizes academic achievement for students who have completed Grades 4 through 12 with an overall GPA of at least 6.0 (a “B” average). Please submit all marks from the academic year (individual report cards or year-end summary of marks).
• This average is calculated using A = 7, B = 6, C+ = 5, etc. The total numbers of courses taken throughout the year are added together; the student is eligible for recognition if the average is above 6.
• Eligible students with a GPA of at least 6 for the year (summary of all report cards for the year) will be awarded Honour Roll recognition of $150.

When can we apply?
• Apply by September 30, 2017 to the Government Office to receive these benefits.

Hi, my son is in a special needs class as he is autistic. He brought his report card home. I signed it and he’s returned the entire report card to the school (or I would think that’s the only place it would be) I have searched high and low for it and it’s not in my home. Schools don’t open again until Sept. I can still apply for his back to school and attendance allowance then?
