Councillor Sheila Charles

Sheila_webNaʔaaʔaqs (woman who listens) is the name given to Sheila Charles by her Uncle Ben Nookemus. She currently lives in Port Alberni and is a councillor for Huu-ay-aht First Nations. She also spent time in Ditidaht with her grandmother Cecelia and grandfather Martin Charles. She enjoyed the teachings and values that her grandparents instilled in her. She has been able to take those lessons and make them a part of who she is.

Her first big job was working for the federal government, Parks Canada on the West Coast Trail. After five years at the WCT, she transferred over to the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. With a desire to put her passion to work for her own nation, she left that position to work for her Nations’ government and her people, Huu-ay-aht.

She is the chair of the Citizen Development Portfolio, which works to ensure Huu-ay-aht Citizens have their social needs addressed so that they enjoy a higher quality of life. She also chairs the Cooperative Management Board (CMB) where we work with Parks Canada protecting and preserving our traditional land along the West Coast Trail and over to Keeha and Kiixin. As a second-term councillor for her nation, which is a self-governing tribe, she returned to hold both the Citizen Development and CMB portfolios for the second time.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact her any time on her cell 250-735-3552 or email sheila.c@huuayaht.org
