Councillor Ben Clappis

Ben_webIt was 34 years ago, in 1981, that Ben Clappis moved back home. When he first arrived, he worked in Gary Jackson’s fish plant that was across the bay in Bamfield. He worked on land for two years until they built a fish packer. There he got the experience of running and navigating an 80-foot boat. That job came to an end when the company went bankrupt. Ben then made the switch to forestry, working in salvaged cedar for 14 years for two local companies.

In 1996, He was asked to run for council, and he got elected. His first was a partial one, which led into 15 years of service on council.

During that time, Ben’s portfolio was community human services, which is health and education. Stemming from this, he was a liaison for community human services at the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council table for 12 years. He also served as the liaison for Huu-ay-aht at School District 70 and North Island College.

He acted as an alternate for then-Elected Chief Councillor Robert Dennis at the First Nation Summit and the Assembly of First Nations. He also took part in the First Nations Summit, Chiefs of B.C., AFN Chiefs of Canada. He was a member of the First Nations Emergency Services of B.C. When the First Nations negotiated to form the First Nations Health Authority, Ben was part of the discussion. He was also involved in the treaty negotiations for Huu-ay-aht as well as many workshops for council.

For the last four years, Ben has been working as a Nuu-chah-nulth education worker at Bamfield Community School. He also spent more than five years working for local cedar salvage contractor Ben Bozak. In 2014, Ben got his Class 1 licence and trained for four months with Western Forest Products driving logging trucks.

He now looks forward to shifting gears and representing the Huu-ay-aht People once again. With his varied background, he is well prepared for his new portfolios of Education, Employment and Training.
